What a photography and video business MAY need before opening day
Q: What do I need to get a photography and video business up and running legally?
A: Let us walk through what your photography and video business may need, piece by piece, so nothing surprises you on opening day.
1. Business license: A business license for a photography business MAY ask whether you shoot in a studio, at clients' venues or both, and whether prints and albums are sold alongside sessions.
2. Home occupation permit: A home occupation permit MAY apply if you edit photos, store gear or meet clients at home, usually with limits on session visits, parking, signage and noise from video work.
3. Sales tax permit: A sales tax permit MAY be needed because physical prints, albums and framed pieces are taxable goods, even when the session itself is a service.
4. Drone operation papers: Flying a camera drone for aerial shots may call for a separate certificate and registration where required.
5. Venue shooting permission: Some parks and event spaces may require a shooting permit for paid sessions.
6. Equipment insurance certificate: Proof of coverage for lenses and lights may be requested by venues that welcome your shoots.
7. Model release template: A sample release form for clients may be asked for with some applications.
8. Company papers: Name registration, LLC formation and a tax ID number are the three companions most owners add; we prepare each of them on this site.
One service fee covers more than one license. If you order a business license and it turns out you also need another one, for example a home occupation permit, we obtain both for the service fee of the business license. Annual tax and application fees charged by the govt are not part of our service fee: we find the applications and fill them out for you.
The upside, with all five senses
Photography brings repeat business, since families grow, couples marry and every holiday card needs a fresh portrait.
A small scene
Picture Cassius adjusting his tripod outside Hollow Oak Weddings, the fresh business license tucked in the camera bag beside a spare battery.
The reason owners form an LLC
A guest trips over your tripod at a wedding and breaks a wrist, and without an LLC the injury claim could reach your house.
Codes and counts
Business code (NAICS): 541921 (Photography Studios, Portrait). This page lists 8 paperwork items for a photography and video business, and each one is marked as something you MAY need, since we confirm which apply.
Tip: Carry backup cards and a second camera body to every shoot, and write the client's shot list down in advance.
Every photographer owns a lens that cost more than the car and a car that cost less than the lens.
Ready when you are: start your order and we will find out what applies to your photography and video business, fill out the applications and keep the paperwork moving. |
